Denzel Washington began his career as an actor with a television movie, "Wilma" in 1977. He made his film debut with "Carbon Copy", where he played an illegitimate son of rich white man. The movie didn't bring him any recognition. Yet this handsome youngman with natural acting talents was just biding his time, playing minor roles in several television and film shows. His big break came in 1982 with a super hit hospital drama "St. Elsewhere" that was aired on NBC from 1982 to 1987. Playing the role of Dr. Chandler in "St. Elsewhere", Denzel had become popular star among the television viewers.
After appearing in a series of television dramas and playing minor roles in movies, his real big break came with "Cry Freedom" {1987} directed by Richard Attenborough. Denzel played the role of Stephen Bantu Biko aka Steve Biko, a noted non-violent and anti-apartheid activist in South Africa. His brilliant performance in "Cry Freedom" won him an Oscar nomination for 'Best Supporting Actor'.
